I have noticed an alarming trend recently. More and more, drivers are jumping red lights. It is difficult to understand how much of a hurry you need to be in to take such a risk but it has become alarmingly common and in a typical week on the road I will now see five or six blatant examples.
One possible reason could be that the deterrent has gone. Police patrol cars are rare things these days and the risk of being caught is now small. A driver may believe that they have assessed the junction and can still get across, but they cannot possibly see everything and that motor bike setting off at speed from behind a truck would accelerate right into their path.
So for the rest of us, those that try hard to make each journey as safe as it can be, there is one rule to reinforce in our minds. A green light always meant ‘proceed with caution’. Now it means ‘have a really good look both to sides before going’.
